History of Gateway Housing Co-operative Inc.

  • Early 1987 a group of five people got together with the intent of building a housing co-operative in north bay
  • March 1, 1987 a Name Search was sent to was sent to CCNS Corporate Services Ltd. to determine if the Name Gateway Housing Co-operative Inc. was clear for use.
  • March 30, 1987 an application was prepared and sent to CMHC to access funds from the Co-operative Housing Program
  • April 16, 1987 an offer to Purchase was made on the property Gateway now stands on.
  • April 17, 1987 Northern Non-Profit Housing was engaged as a Resource Group to help make Gateway a reality
  • April 27, 1987 clearance for the name Gateway Housing Co-operative Inc. was received.
  • May 11, 1987 a request with supporting documentation was made for incorporation.
  • June 26, 1987 Gateway was Incorporated
  • December 1987 site plans (blueprints) completed and building commenced.
  • September 1988 orientation sessions and interviews began for filling the units
  • October 1988, a co-ordinator (Patricia Kirton-Bailey) was hired and contract signed for commencement of employment November 1, 1988
  • December 1, 1988 the first members moved into Gateway Housing Co-operative
  • January 30, 1989 the first AGM held at Gateway, and the election of the first resident Board of Directors
  • August 1, 2019 the final mortgage payment was made
  • August 2020 a Phase 2 funding agreement was signed with CMHC to continue our geared to income housing until March 2028.
